For my talk at SLU, April 15, 2011:
[Contemporary Street] Art is a Hammer
The quote, “Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it,” has been attributed to playwright Bertolt Brecht and serves as the conceptual framework of my presentation on contemporary street art, and specifically political stickers from NYC and Berlin. Based on these, I will discuss topics including individual freedoms, civil rights, war and terrorism, capitalism, the economy, and urban development, among others, using primary examples from my collection of over 3,000 original stickers gathered by hand from around the world since 2003.
